Equi Rerelease Changes, Vol. 1

Okay, here we go! I'll obviously be starting with "Equilibrium," but before I can do that, there were a bunch of global revisions for the whole story that I needed to make. First, redesigning the covers.

Woohoo! I wanted the covers to say more about the storyline of each book, including both the characters and the setting. I also used the color scheme and borders as a way to call back to the original covers. (I'm redoing the interior formatting, too. I'll know more about what that will look like once I decide whether to use Vellum or Atticus.)

As far as the story goes, there are a few things I'm hoping to make some adjustments to (spoiler alert):
  • The magic system in Csenfeisna is severely underdeveloped. I've been brainstorming ideas and workshopping with other writers to make the interactions between auras, atmospheric energies, and magic practice make more sense.
  • Because of the changes in the magic system, certain aspects of the plot are also going to change, such as the origin of Delcina's powers, Kaspar's motivations, the spell that's used on Earth, etc. I'm hoping to use it as a foundation to flesh out the world a little more, with magic obviously being a key component in Csenfeisna's culture and economy.
  • I'm going to dial down the language like I mentioned earlier, so the age range/genre is clearer. In my everyday life, I tend to express myself a lot by swearing, and it took me a while to learn that that doesn't always translate well in writing.
  • I've learned a great deal about some of the more serious subject matter in these books, and I want to approach them from a place of better understanding. Broad topics like violence, grief, and guilt, and the more specific topics like Cylestra's situation with Jason, Halley's night terrors, and the chaos of societal upheaval. I'll get into more specific details on that later, when I'm working on those individual elements.
  • I've been doing a lot of worldbuilding to move story-relevant details into the main plot, with blog posts being more for snapshot information on certain things in the story, and the bonus side stories being more for character background that doesn't have a chance to develop in the main plot. One worldbuilding thing that I've always regretted not including: Csenfeisna is a moon. Holla.
I think those are most of the big-picture things I'm going to work on; I'll continue posting with more details as I go. Some of the pages on the website are also going to change soon as I update the book information. Until then, I'm pulling up the Equi manuscript and getting started!
